Nose Work

Nose Work is an exciting, positive and fun sport designed to channel dogs’ natural scenting abilities. Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and a natural desire to hunt.  This makes scent work the most natural thing any dog can do!  This sport is based on the foundation skills used in K9 detection work training, like bomb or drug detection.  Classes focus on teaching you how to encourage and develop your dog’s natural scenting abilities by using their curiosity, desire to hunt, and their love of food and toys.  Whether you plan on working toward a title, providing your dog with a new challenge or doing it just for fun, it’s a great way for any dog to build confidence and burn lots of mental energy!  Dogs are sniffing it up and having a BLAST! Find out how good your dog’s nose really is! These classes are great for ELDERLY and REACTIVE dogs!

Intro to Nose Work – 1 & 2

These 6-week courses offer an introduction to the sport for dogs with no prior nose/scent work class experience.  Intro to Nose Work 1 is the first level you must complete before registering for any other classes.  In Intro to Nose Work 2, we will continue building the foundation skills started in Intro to Nose Work – 1.  In addition, interior searches may be introduced and we will further refine the skills of the dog/handler teams by working on leash management techniques, practicing correct reward delivery and starting pattern searches.  Handlers will learn how to read their dog’s body language when working scent.  We will discuss environmental factors affecting searches and continue to build the dog’s focus and confidence in different environments.

This course may be offered in-person or via video conferencing.  Please see the class schedule for location details.

PLEASE NOTE: WE ALLOW TWO HANDLERS PER DOG FOR IN-PERSON CLASSES.

COST:  $200 for six 1-hour sessions.  Payment is required upon registration to hold your spot in the class.

Nose Work Intro to Odor – 1 & 2

In this class, we will introduce the dogs to the first odor, the essential oil of Birch.  We begin by pairing Birch with the dog’s primary reward of food/treats to create a positive association between the odor and the reward.  Proper handling of odor and the use of various objects to contain the odor will be taught.  In addition, we will further refine the skills of the dog/handler teams by working on leash management techniques, practicing correct reward delivery and continuing pattern searches. Handlers will continue to learn how to read their dog’s body language when working scent.

We will gradually begin to transition the dogs from “paired” hides (odor + reward) to “odor only” hides.  We will continue to further refine the skills of the dog/handler teams by working on reading their dog’s body language, recognizing alert responses, reward skills, staying at odor drills. Leash management techniques as well as body positioning and movement will also be a focus.

PRE-REQUISITE for this course is completion of the Intro to Nose Work – 2, Nose Work Intro to Odor – 1,  or prior experience with instructor approval.
